Kumaran is a Jefferson Fellow of the East West Centre, based out of Hawaii, USA. In the last six years, he has contributed significantly towards the development of a free press in Singapore.
theindependent.sg, an online publication he started in 2013, is ranked as the #1 alternative news site in Singapore. Bootstrapped because of restrictions on funding, Kumaran built the business by successfully developing a viable revenue model.
Kumaran also ran a startup incubator from 2013-2016 and incubated some 40 startups in Singapore.
Prior to that, he ran a systems integration firm and won several local and international awards for his work
Ashish has over 20 years of experience having worked in the US, Europe, China and for the last 11 years in Asia out of Singapore. He has worked in numerous business development and product marketing roles in both large organisations like Singtel where he was heading innovations, Google and his last stint at Microsoft as the asia director of the windows store.
Ashish is equally comfortable in incubating new businesses having incubated a few small to medium businesses in asia taking them from zero to 15 million dollars in revenue. He now helps Appleseed and its portfolio companies full time as a mentor and a shareholder.
